WORKSHOP DESCRIPTION
Computational argumentation is a rapidly growing field of research at the crossroads of argumentation theory, formal semantics, and computational linguistics. Within this field, there is a pressing need for having available larger corpora of annotated argumentative discourse. The general aim of this workshop is to address this need by exploring ways of combining human and machine annotation of argumentative discourse.
The workshop will take place on Monday 6 November 2023 at Delft University of Technology. It will consist of two parts: (1) presentations and a panel discussion about state-of-the-art methods, frameworks and tools for annotating argumentative discourse and the availability of annotated corpora of argumentative discourse; (2) discussion of research plans and exploration of collaboration between researchers with relevant expertise on argumentation theory, formal semantics, computational argumentation, and corpus linguistics.
(1) State-of-the-art session
In the morning session, researchers from different disciplinary provenance will present their work on methods for annotating argumentative discourse, varying from presenting detailed annotation guidelines for specific aspects of such discourse (e.g., statement types, stance indicators and other coherence markers, argument types, implicit elements in argumentative discourse) to giving demos of online annotation tools implementing such aspects and/or presenting examples of resulting annotated corpora of argumentative discourse. The morning session will be closed with an expert panel of presenters, creating the opportunity of having a lively discussion and fruitful interaction with the audience.
(2) Exploring collaboration session
In the afternoon session, participants will have the chance to gain hands-on experience with the use of annotation tools in live annotation sessions and, partially based on that, to set up new collaborations or expand ongoing ones in exploration of collaborative potential in breakout groups.
