We are happy to announce that Erik Vellinga is joining LANCAR as a PhD student. In his project, Erik studies the specific problems of reconstructing argumentation in fiction. Fiction creates a dichotomy between the real world and the fictional world, making its discursive genre particularly problematic in pragmatic theories of language. The dichotomy results in indirect language use, a plausible deniability of commitment and thus the question if and how arguments in fiction can be reconstructed. In turn, studying these problems contributes to other research into (reconstructing) indirect language in argumentation.
